Is Yaari a spam social network?

Yaari is a site dedicated to spam, I have no doubt.

Avoid it like the plague.

I received an invite from one of my contacts to become his “friend” on Yaari.

The early adopter and social network junky in me rejoiced! I admit that I will join just about anything that looks interesting.

My attitude is that you can only judge the value of a network once you are a member and you participate. I have discovered some real gems that have added huge value to my online life and Scam Stop in the strangest places.

But I have come across some really dangerous dogs as well.

Yaari is one of them.

You can never judge from the site what you are dealing with so I ALWAYS check before I join.

Two simple steps can save you from a lot of grief.

First Google the site and look out for adverse comments.

When I Googled Yaari a number of “red flags” waved very vigorously. All had negative things to say about Yaari. Here is my Google search.

You should always read the Terms of Service of any site BEFORE you sign up.

This is critical.

I read the terms of Service of Yaari and here is what I found.

By registering for the Yaari website, and by giving Yaari member’s email address and password, a member agrees to the Terms of Service and consents to allow Yaari to automatically send an email from the member to member’s contacts, encouraging member’s contacts to register for the Yaari website. Invitation emails will be sent on member’s behalf, with the ‘from’ address set as member’s email address. Yaari will never store member’s email password.

Yes you read that right, sign up and Yaari AUTOMATICALLY sends invites to ALL your contacts to join Yaari on your behalf.

As Yaari is a social networking site for the Indian youth, your contacts may find your invite to be a bit strange!

The real killer is still to come. (Yes it does get worse)

E) Notice Regarding Commercial Email

MEMBERS CONSENT TO RECEIVE COMMERCIAL E-MAIL MESSAGES FROM YAARI, AND ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT THEIR EMAIL ADDRESSES AND OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY BE USED BY YAARI FOR THE PURPOSE OF INITIATING COMMERCIAL E-MAIL MESSAGES.

If you join the site you agree that they can spam you and all your contacts.

Even worse, they use YOUR e mail address so your contacts will think that YOU are spamming them!

Cute.

That reputation you were building?

Gone.

This extract was taken off the Yaari site this morning so these are the current Yaari TOS.

There are other really hair raising clauses in the TOS. You can read them here.

My advice is just stay away.

Oh and by the way my contact never sent me the invite, he just made the mistake of signing up.

The strange think is that this controversy has been raging since the inception of the site but it continues to attract members who blindly agree that Yaari may spam all their contacts.

Don’t people read the TOS before they join a site?

Don’t people spend 5 minutes doing some basic research before hitting the “I agree” button?

Do you?

The lesson here is that you MUST for your self protection AND that of all your contacts.
